Ketton has four defibrillators. Each defibrillator is coded and logged with the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). If you are with someone you fear is having a cardiac arrest and has stopped breathing, dial 999 immediately and ask for the ambulance service. Tell the EMAS operator that the person has stopped breathing. You will be asked for your location and an ambulance will be dispatched immediately. You will also be asked if there is a defibrillator in the village and be given a code to unlock the defibrillator cabinet. You will need to get someone to fetch the defibrillator – a neighbour or family member. The operator will stay on the telephone with and talk you through how to give cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR keeps the blood moving round the body to support vital organs. Once the defibrillator is to hand the EMAS operator will tell you what to do and will stay on the line, advising and supporting, until the ambulance arrives.

If you are unsure about CPR please think about some training. The former Ketton First Responders are happy to give short training courses on CPR and the use of defibrillators. It takes less than an hour and can be in your own home with friends and neighbours. Give Glenis Southern a call on 01780729291 or email to arrange some training.
